The Provo City Council had not made a decision on the future of a historic Catholic church building as of press deadline Tuesday night.
The St. Francis of Assisi Parish has applied to have the building, 172 N. 500 West, removed from the Provo Landmarks Register so it can be sold to finance a new church in Orem. The two-hour public hearing was followed by a lengthy discussion by the council.
The parish left the building in 1998 and worships in a gymnasium in Orem while it waits to build a new church. The parish has signed a contract with a developer who is willing to pay $1.2 million for the property if its future use is not restricted by the landmark designation.
The contract option expires in May.
