PROVO — One big inning did the Timpview softball team in as Wasatch racked up a 12-3 victory in Provo on Friday.
After the T-birds took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-RBI single by Camille LaFollette, it was all Wasatch in the second inning. The Wasps sent 11 batters to the box and managed to get seven of them across the plate for the 7-2 lead.
"If it wasn't for that one inning, we'd have been right in the game," said Timpview coach Debbie Dodds, who added that her team is right there at the cusp but just needs to learn how to win.
Wasatch, on the other hand, knows exactly how to win. Score, and score big, behind seven solid singles, one double and a powerful home run.
Five of those hits came in the high-powered second. It all started when Rebekah Poloncic was hit by a pitch. Janeece Veazie zipped an infield single to put two runners on. Right fielder Becca Fillerup powered the ball over the fence in left field to score three. And the Wasps were off and running.
One of Timpview's two errors put Kelsy Berg on base, and third baseman Kaylie Georgio smacked a grounder up the middle, scoring the fourth run of the inning. Leadoff hitter Alyson Baird beat out a nifty bunt to third, driving in the fifth run and winding up on second on a throw home.
After a pitching change, MaKayle Price walked and Jarrell Veazie singled. Poloncic recorded the final RBI of the inning before the runner was tagged at third to finally end the inning. But that was all the Wasps needed.
The T-birds added their final run of the game on a double by center fielder Chelsea Clark and an RBI single by Megan Fillmore, who managed two singles off the Wasatch pitching.
Wasatch added two more to pad its lead in the fifth on a single, an error and a pair of sacrifices. It finished things off in the seventh with yet another hit by Poloncic, who topped her game off with a double to deep left center.
Eight different Wasps had hits in the game.
