PROVO — In one of the season's first major track meets, the Timpview boys and Spanish Fork girls more than lived up to early season expectations, running away from the field on Saturday at the Bulldog Invitational at Provo High.
For the girls, the Dons racked up 211.5, more than second-place Lone Peak (111) and third-place Springville (98) combined.
Spanish Fork coach Dave Boyack benefited from depth across the board, as the Dons scored points in every event but one.
"One thing we're really pleased about is that we brought two busloads of kids today," Boyack said. "I think all in all, we've got the depth we'd hoped for."
Junior Natalie Stewart led the way for the Dons, picking up victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter sprints. Nachelle Stewart not only finished second in the 100, but running the 800-meter run for the first time in outdoor competition, won the event with a 2 minutes, 14.09 seconds.
Spanish Fork's Kirsten Sly took the win in the 3,200-meter run to go along with her third-place finish in the 1,600 meter. The Dons also tallied some serious points in the field events, as Becca Rowley triumphed in the discus and the shot put, while teammate Kelly Roach took top honors in the javelin throw.
"Even though this is our third meet, it's still very early," Boyack said. "We've got lots of room to improve, but a lot of time to do it."
Other individual winners included: Lone Peak's Angie Kaplar in the 100m and 300m hurdles; the Knights' Lacey Cramer in the mile; American Leadership Academy's Sally Hansen in the long jump; Springville's Natalie Young in the high jump.
On the boys side, Timpview's depth in the sprints and distance events powered the T-birds to 211 points, with Spanish Fork and Springville finishing tied for second at 110.
"We've had better times, but their efforts were just great," said Timpview coach Brian Kuhlmann. "We've got some areas we need to improve a little bit on, but we're doing really well."
Timpview's distance crew swept the top spots in the distance races, finishing with 70 points between the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Nathan Fletcher took first in the 1,600, with Ken Cline and Jonathan Nelson placing first in the 800 and 3,200, respectively, for Timpview.
The T-bird sprinters were not far behind, as Chris Page and Tyler Goodwin recorded high finishes in the 100 and 200. Laurence Glazier and Ryan Hill patrolled the field events for Timpview, scoring well in each of the throws. Other individual winners in the boys competition were: Springville's Cory Pierson (110m hurdles) and Enoch Campbell (javelin), Provo's Isaac Robison (400m dash), and Lone Peak's Aaron Kay (long jump).
