WEST VALLEY CITY — Police are looking for a man and a woman they say led officers on a high-speed chase through two cities after they were caught in what is believed to be a forgery operation.
Just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, police pulled over an SUV in the area of 3060 South and 2700 West because the vehicle had been reported stolen. When officers approached, the vehicle sped off, said West Valley Police Lt. Matt Elson.
Police chased the vehicle along several streets and onto north-bound Bangerter Highway to I-80 into Salt Lake City and then to North Temple. Speeds were reported in excess of 80 miles per hour even though the vehicle was being driven with one blown rear tire.
Elson said while being chased on I-80, the occupants were seen throwing papers out of the vehicle. Papers recovered indicated those in the vehicle may have been involved in a check-forgery operation and were attempting to dump evidence.
Police stopped pursuing the vehicle when it fled into the Avenues area of Salt Lake City. It was last seen in the area of T Street and First Avenue. A concerned neighbor contacted police to report that a strange vehicle had parked in a carport. By the time police arrived the stolen vehicle had been abandoned.
Elson said police are working on information which may lead them to the pair who were in the vehicle, but as of Sunday night, the investigation was continuing.
