A pair of early morning fires in Salt Lake City left one woman in critical condition and caused almost $100,000 in damage to two apartments.
The first fire was reported just before 2 a.m. Monday near 400 East and 650 South. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and knocked the fire down quickly, said Salt Lake City Fire Assistant Battalion Chief Dennis McKone. After the fire was out, rescue crews found a 47-year-old woman with no pulse in a back room of the duplex.
Firefighters administered CPR, McKone said. She was sent to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators later determined the woman apparently started the fire intentionally for an unknown reason.
Damage was estimated at $40,000.
About 10 minutes after the fire started, crews were called to an unrelated house fire down the street near 600 South and 700 East, McKone said.
A man with a garden hose was trying to keep the flames from spreading, he said.
That fire was also knocked down quickly. No one was injured, and damage was estimated at $50,000, McKone said.
