SARATOGA SPRINGS — Plumes of black smoke seen above Saratoga Springs Monday morning came from a fire set by Utah County fire officials.
From 10 a.m. to around noon, officers from the Utah County Wildland Fire Program burned some of the marshy shoreline on Saratoga Road from 400 South to about 700 South, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
The cattails, reeds and weeds growing along the banks pose a fire hazard if they grow to full size and then dry out during the summer heat. To decrease the risk of fire, crews generally conduct an annual burn to keep the weeds under control, Cannon said.
