Herbert P Benner 11/2/1928 ~ 4/7/2007 In memory of Herbert Paul Benner born November 2, 1928, to Earl and Dorthea Young Benner in Pasadena, CA. Is preceded in death by wife Virginia and brothers George, Earl and Lionel. Is survived by children, Kathy (John) Eggertsen, Paul (Valerie), Barbara Middlemiss, Linda (Mark) Doherty, Steven (Marilyn), and 10 grandchildren. Herb was a member of the Catholic Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister and held many other positions throughout the years. At the age of 17 Herb joined the Navy, where he became a Meteorologist. Later he met Virginia Short and they were married in 1950 in Mt. Shasta, CA. Herb was dedicated to his family and career and earned the position of Executive Officer of the Western Region of the National Weather Service. During his career he earned the Department of Commerce Gold and Bronze Medal Awards of Achievement. Herb volunteered as the Chief Commander of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team from 1974 to 1980 and was a Scoutmaster for 15 years. Herb's hobbies included leather work, oil painting, gardening, fishing and gold mining. After retirement Herb and Virginia traveled extensively while managing their vending business and working as campground hosts. They enjoyed their yearly trips to Mexico. Herb was always there to lend a helping hand to friends, neighbors and those in need. Even through his illness Herb never lost his sense of humor and was loved by all care givers. He will be missed by all who knew him. A special thanks to the staff at Canyon Creek Memory Center and Hearts for Hospice. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 12, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 E. Creek Road (7800 S.). Friends may call at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S.) Wednesday, April 11, 2007 from 6-7:30 p.m. followed by a Vigil at 7:30 p.m.
