I'd like to think Ryan Curtis was merely using hyperbole when he wrote that if illegal immigration is not solved quickly, "the population of illegal aliens will outnumber American citizens." (Readers' Forum, April 11.)
However, the naivete of his second claim, to simply deport all "illegal aliens," was far more disconcerting. Not only does it ignore the complexity of the issue but also its humanity. I mourn that Curtis' view is unfortunately not unique. Lady Liberty's call to the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" has been reduced to a historical emblem of the way things once were. Unfortunately, now that our own ancestors have immigrated and assimilated, we are too willing to lock that once-golden door.
