The Utah Public Service Commission is seeking written public comment on whether the new 385 Wasatch Front area code should be implemented as an "overlay" or "split" of the existing 801 area.

Comments should be sent to the Public Service Commission, 4th Floor Heber M. Wells Building, 160 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, and they should refer to Docket No. 07-999-01. The deadline is May 31.

A split would result in Salt Lake County retaining the 801 code, but Weber, Morgan, Davis and Utah counties switching to 385. An overlay would retain 801 in all five counties, with the 385 code being added to new phone numbers when the 801 numbers are exhausted.

A group of telecommunication companies are pushing for the overlay option. Their petition can be found at www.psc.utah.gov/misc/07docs/0799901/801%20overlay%20petition.doc.
