The Deseret Morning News won the Community Service award in this year's Utah Press Association's annual Better Newspaper contest.
The award recognizes a paper's editorial project that "produces outstanding benefits for the newspaper's community." That project for the Morning News was titled, "Teen suicide: Utah's grim reality," which ran last year, April 23-28.
The Morning News also brought home first-place honors for best feature column, by Cathy Free; best sports page; best run-of-press ad (with Salt Lake Tribune); best use of ad color (with Salt Lake Tribune); best in-house promotion (with Salt Lake Tribune), Lauren Ball.
Other awards included second, best investigative reporting, Lee Davidson; second, best editorial, Marjorie Cortez; second, best editor's column, Lois Collins; third, best sports photograph, Scott Winterton; second, best front page; third, best feature or lifestyle page; second, best classified page or pages (with Salt Lake Tribune); second, best circulation promotion.
