OREM — Two Brigham Young University football players were arrested over the weekend, accused of breaking down a door to confront two people who were throwing water balloons.

Two players, both 19, went to the Parkway Crossing Apartment complex at 1140 S. 1350 West in Orem late Friday night in response to a call for help from a girlfriend of one of the players, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.

She had been hit by a water balloon tossed from the balcony of a third-floor apartment. Balloons were being tossed by a 22-year-old male and a 22-year-old female.

After shouting back and forth with the man and woman, the girlfriend, 19, threatened to return with some men, Edwards said.

When the two BYU players arrived, they too exchanged heated words with the balloon-throwers, then decided to fight them, Edwards said.

They broke down a door to the wrong apartment before finding the room with the water-balloon throwers. After the men left, the individuals in the apartment with the broken-down door called security.

The security officer — actually an off-duty Orem police officer — told the residents to call 911 and that he was on his way, Edwards said.

Numerous officers arrived, preventing a brawl in the balloon-throwers' apartment. Both players and the girlfriend of the player were taken into custody.

The three were booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of burglary, criminal mischief and assault.

The two players are still in custody, but the girlfriend bailed out on $2,500 cash or bond bail Monday morning.

The two balloon throwers were cited for criminal mischief.
