AMERICAN FORK — An overpass needs repairs after it was clipped by a semitrailer truck hauling a mobile home.

The truck driver was southbound on I-15 around 10:15 a.m. Friday and came to the overpass just south of the 500 East exit.

The truck proceeded under Sam White Road and clipped the corner of the concrete bridge, shearing the corner and side of the mobile home, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Preston Raban.

The truck clipped one of the metal girders underneath and bent it about 10 degrees, which will require future repair but is safe to drive on now, said Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Nile Easton.

The bridge clearance is 14 feet 7 inches. Had the truck been in another lane, the driver might have been able to clear it as the overpass arches up in a rainbow shape, Raban said.

UDOT posts a height statement on each bridge to warn motorists.

"It's (the driver's) responsibility to meet those so (they) don't do what just happened," Raban said. "Somebody dropped the ball."

The truck was pulled off the road and taken to another location for an investigation as to its stability. The driver will be cited, Raban said.

No one was injured, but three cars were damaged by debris from the mobile home.

Traffic was diverted to the 500 East exit as all southbound lanes were closed while UDOT and UHP officials cleaned up debris, including nails.

The road was closed from 10:15 a.m. until just after noon, and the overpass was opened an hour later.

It's not the first time bridges have been clipped, and certainly not the worst, Easton said, but still a frustration.
