CENTERVILLE — A police officer shot and killed a 29-year-old man early Sunday morning after the man pointed a loaded rifle at the officer.

Police were at a home near 100 East and 250 North at 1 a.m. trying to arrest the man as part of an assault investigation when the shooting occurred, said Centerville Police Sgt. Niles Bartleson. When police entered the home, they found the man and the rifle.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and was shot, Bartleson said. The man has since died.

Before entering the home, police did not have reason to believe the man would be armed, Bartleson said.

The officer who killed the man has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Bountiful Police Department and the Davis County Attorney's Office investigate the shooting.
