Salt Lake City police are looking for a white box van that they believe intentionally ran over a cyclist early Sunday morning.

The alleged assault occurred while a local couple was cycling on 2450 South and 600 East about 2 a.m. They were headed home from a party when they saw a van heading in the other direction.

The van attempted to make a U-turn but had to back up, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Dave Hoffman. As it backed up, it nearly hit the cyclists, so one of them slapped the back of the van.

The van and cyclists then drove forward, but when the van's driver saw the cyclists again the van revved its engine and ran over one of the bikers.

The man suffered several broken bones between his knees and shoulders and had to have his spleen removed. He was in critical condition Sunday night.

Anyone with information about the van should call police at 799-3000. Police believe it was a delivery van with dual rear wheels. It may have received front-end damage in the crash and may also have a severe oil leak.

Police are investigating the crash as either aggravated assault or attempted homicide, Hoffman said.
