Brandt Neider's letter comparing the war on terror with World War II suggests that victory can be achieved simply through American unity, persistence and support for our troops. Unfortunately, our current conflict is waged against an idea and ignores the reasons behind terror in favor of a costly and endless crusade. Bin Laden commands no standing army, no nation-states have declared war against us and the world condemns our unilateral forays that destabilize whole regions and incite new antagonists. It is empty rhetoric that conjures false parallels with previous conflicts. If this new kind of war is ever to end, our strategy must be tailored to it. Unity on the home front may have helped win WWII, but blind support for a faulty plan is downright unpatriotic.
