SYRACUSE — Thirty-one golfers shot 70 or better Monday at Glen Eagle Golf Course to qualify for this week's Utah Open.

Matt Phillips of Twin Falls, Idaho, fired a course-record-tying 9-under-par 63 to lead all qualifiers. Matthew Baird of Mesa, Ariz., and Nic Larson, an amateur from Wyoming, tied for second at 66.

Former BYU golfer Nick Becker, who recently turned pro, University of Utah golfer Chance Cota and Salt Lake amateur Jon Linnett were among a group of seven golfers at 67, while Utah golf coach Randall McCracken was one of four golfers at 68.

Of the 31 qualifiers, 17 were amateurs, including high school sophomore Cole Ogden of West Point. In all, 152 golfers tried to qualify for the Utah Open.

The 54-hole tournament begins Friday and will run through Sunday at the Oakridge Country Club. Pete Stone is the defending champion and the field will include former Utah Open champion and PGA Tour winner Jay Don Blake.
