PAYSON — Busloads of ardent fans are already headed to Payson for the Payson Arts Council's production of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," and director Michael Carruso doesn't expect they'll be disappointed.

"I think people will be exhilarated," Carruso said as the show moved into final rehearsals with actors in powdered wigs, velvet uniforms and lace gowns. "This show has a following. It's the English version of Zorro. It has everything: mystery, intrigue, love and beautiful music."

Marilyn Bingham, who plays Marguerite, said the music was a major draw for her.

"This is a part I have wanted to play since high school," Bingham said. "The story has always been a favorite of mine, and the music is some of the most beautiful. If you love this story, you're going to love this show."

Bingham's favorite is "I'll Forget You."

Perry Ewell, who plays Percy, said he loves the passion of the story.

"To me, the most important point of the story is you have two people who don't trust each other but are still faithful to each other," said Ewell.

Brent Wesson, who plays Chavelin, said he saw the show at the SCERA in Orem and decided he had to play the role some day.

"I love playing the bad guy," he said. "It's sort of a step out for me."

Ewell and Wesson had to learn to fence to perform their roles in the show, something they worked at seriously and have learned to love.

"We were both newbies," Ewell said.

All of the lead actors had praise for Carruso, who came to Payson two years ago to direct productions.

"Michael is excellent because he's been there," Wesson said. "If you act before you direct, you're so much better."
