FREMONT PARK CELEBRATION
The staff at Fremont Indian State Park and Museum will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the park on Saturday.
Museum fees will be waived throughout the day, and the first 100 visitors will receive a free, limited edition of the Utah State Parks postcard book.
Events begin with a rededication of the park at 10:30 a.m. A Paiute elder will offer a blessing, and several speakers will discuss the archaeology of Clear Creek Canyon and how the park was created. Paiute dancers and drummers will also perform.
Family activities include American Indian games and atlatl throwing. The atlatl is an ancient spear. Among the demonstrations will be pottery making, basketry and flintknapping.
There will be a mountain man camp, and park staff will offer guided tours to area rock art.
The park is located 21 miles south of Richfield on I-70. For more information, call 435-527-4631.
90 DAYS TO SKIING
Despite hot temperatures, more than 600 Utah locals gathered on the corner of 200 South and West Temple last week to recognize the 90-day countdown for the 2007-08 ski season.
Those attending received free snow cones and shade from a 30-foot-tall snowman.
"It was great to see our local enthusiasm for winter sports at its best in the dog days of summer," said Nathan Rafferty, president of Ski Utah. "Our local support reaffirms that Utah will have many great ski seasons to come."
Traditionally, Utah's ski season opens in mid-November. It has opened in late October.
