Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said it found traces of melamine in Chinese-made dog treats the company pulled from shelves last month.
Wal-Mart removed Chicken Jerky Strips made by Import- Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading on July 26 after receiving a "small number of complaints," about the products, the company said in a statement last night. The retailer, based in Bentonville, Ark., said it conducted 17 tests on the products and will perform further testing.
In March, Menu Foods Ltd., based in Streetsville, Ontario, recalled more than 60 million cans of pet food after dogs and cats sickened or died from kidney failure. The deaths and injuries were later found to be caused by melamine-tainted wheat gluten that came from China. Melamine is used to make fertilizer.
