OREM — It was only a midday exhibition game between Utah Valley State and Weber State with both coaches testing out different combinations for the regular season. Despite the match being relegated to preseason status, it was still a tough contest as the Wildcats came out on top 1-0.
"We ran a lot of players and everyone for the most part got some time," Weber State coach Tim Crompton said.
The scoreline could have been in Weber State's favor earlier in the match, but the 'Cats missed several chances. Natalie Blaylock's goal in the 66th minute gave the Wildcats the only score they needed. Lauren Parkhurst set up the attack by receiving a cross from midfield and then flicking it to Blaylock near the box, who struck the ball cleanly into the back of the net.
Weber State could have scored just a minute earlier, but Whitney Smith wasn't able to get off a good shot despite only having UVSC goaltender Mallory Schott in front of her.
"As far as our team is concerned, I think they are going to have plenty of opportunities to win games," Crompton said.
UVSC wasn't really in the game for most of the match as the Wildcats' defense kept the Wolverines from effectively setting up their attack. UVSC only put four shots on goal in the game, countered by Weber State's 16.
The lack of quality possessions was a concern to UVSC coach Brent Anderson and points to several reasons why his team struggled.
"A few things definitely that we've learned right off the bat is our fitness level isn't where it needs to be," Anderson said. "And the pressure we put ourselves under at practice isn't great enough because we couldn't handle that pressure."
Two opportunities for the Wolverines to get on the board failed when Nicole Archibald's blast in the first half was tipped safely over the cross bar by Weber State goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie. Later, Katey Turner also had a chance with Jennie Clough on the wing in a two-on-one situation, but Weber State's defense held strong as a well-timed slide tackle spoiled the play.
Both teams continue their preseason schedules on Friday with Weber State taking on Southern Utah at home and UVSC making an early road trip to face Idaho State.
