WEMBLEY, England — David Beckham's sore left ankle held up enough for him to play the entire game in the middle leg of his trans-Atlantic odyssey.
Beckham made his 97th international appearance, but his presence wasn't enough to keep England from losing 2-1 to Germany in an exhibition game on Wednesday night.
Frank Lampard scored in the ninth minute, but Kevin Kuranyi equalized in the 25th and Christian Pander put the Germans ahead in the 40th. Germany, which beat England 1-0 in the final international game at the old Wembley Stadium in October 2000, became the first team to beat England in the new Wembley.
Beckham made his 97th international appearance, his first since joining Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy last month. After playing his first full game for the Galaxy at Giants Stadium in a 5-4 loss Saturday night, he played an energetic 90 minutes without showing too much discomfort from his injured left ankle.
Beckham plans to return to the Galaxy in time to play tonight against Chivas USA in Carson, Calif.
SWEDEN 1, U.S. 0: At Goteborg, Sweden, back in Europe, the U.S. soccer team lost — as usual. Kim Kallstrom scored in the 56th minute to lead Sweden over the United States 1-0 Wednesday night and send the Americans to their first four-game losing streak in a decade. With most of its top players in the starting lineup, the U.S. team failed to create many offensive opportunities.
HUNGARY 3, ITALY 1: At Budapest, Hungary upset World Cup champion Italy 3-1 in an exhibition game Wednesday night, rallying with three goals in the final half hour. The Italians, who open the Serie A season this weekend, had won their previous five games but seemed out of shape and increasingly tired as the game went on. Antonio Di Natale, a second-half substitute, put the Azzurri ahead in the 49th minute, deflecting a shot from Filippo Inzaghi from about 14 yards. Hungary tied the score in the 62nd minute after Gianluca Zambrotta failed to clear a ball sent into the middle of the penalty area. Tamas Vasko headed Zambrotta's popup to Roland Juhasz, who beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon with a left-footed volley. Zoltan Gera converted a penalty kick three minutes later. Hungary got the final goal in the 76th minute.
CUNNINGHAM, O'BRIEN OUT: Toronto FC forward Jeff Cunningham and midfielder Ronnie O'Brien will miss the rest of the season because of injuries. Cunningham has a hernia, and O'Brien has a torn meniscus in his right knee. They join veteran goalkeeper Greg Sutton on the injured list. Sutton sustained a concussion while playing for Canada at the Gold Cup in June.
WIZARDS EDGE FIRE: At Kansas City, Jose Burciaga Jr. scored a goal and assisted on tallies by Sasha Victorine and Scott Sealy, all in the second half, to lead the Kansas City Wizards to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday night. The Wizards (9-7-5) snapped a two-game losing streak and moved one point behind third-place New York in the Eastern Conference standings. Chicago (6-9-5) is in sixth.
MORENO SETS SCORING RECORD: Jaime Moreno broke the MLS goal-scoring record when he converted a penalty kick in the second half of D.C. United's 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night. It was the 109th career goal for the 33-year-old Bolivian forward, moving him ahead of Jason Kreis.
