Salt Lake County Lead Safe Housing Program has free grant money available to assist in removing lead paint from contaminated homes.

Childhood lead poisoning remains a major environmental health problem in the United States, and it is entirely preventable. Dust from disturbed paint settles on toys, windowsills and floors and can be swallowed by young children. Lead-poisoned children often suffer from learning disabilities, brain and central nervous system damage and other physical effects.

If you live in a home in Salt Lake County built before 1978 and have a child under the age of 6 that lives in or frequently visits the house, and you are in the median income range, you may qualify for free services. These services may include lead testing for your home, blood screening for your children, window replacement and paint repair.

Median income for a family of two is $39,300; for a family of three, $44,200; for a family of four, $49,100; for a family of five, $53,050; and for a family of six, $56,700.
