STYLE: The Wildcat defense was as good as any in the Big Sky last year but wore down over the course of the season as the offense struggled to keep it off the field. With a roving linebacker and strong line, the WSU defense confused opponents often and stuffed the run well. Look for Ty Sparrow, Scotty Goodloe, Derek Johnson and Pate Moleni to step it up. Losing Tyler DeBry, Bo Smith (graduation) and Rio Stotler(grades) will hurt, though.
PERSONNEL: With Smith gone, the Wildcats went out and got a few junior college DBs to fill the void. John Carroway and Duane Paul are being asked to provide instant help on the corners. Only four starters return from the excellent unit of last year, so expect a little adjustment period before things click.
WHAT TO EXPECT:If the newcomers fit in quickly and perform as expected, McBride says the defense won't skip a beat. If the corners can't cover anyone, though, opponents will pick on them early and often. Sparrow, however, is as good as the Big Sky has.
