A Riverton woman asleep in her bed with her husband woke up early Thursday to find another man holding a knife to her throat, according to investigators.
The incident happened about 4:45 a.m. at a house near 12100 South and 3300 West. A woman woke up after hearing a noise and then found herself facing a man with a knife, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Rex Mulholland.
The woman screamed and fought the man off. She suffered cuts on her shoulders and fingers, Mulholland said.
When the man fled, the woman's husband, who was also in the bed, chased after him but was unable to catch him, he said.
Investigators believe the intruder may have entered the house through a basement door and then grabbed a knife from the kitchen. Mulholland did not believe anything was taken from the house.
"This is very unusual for us," he said. "This is certainly not an everyday occurrence."
Because it was dark, Mulholland said the only description the couple could provide is that it was a tall, thin man wearing dark clothes, possibly a jersey, he said.
