On the second day of summer, our son, Spencer, was run over by the truck that never saw him. I (Jim Gieber) thought he was dead when the EMTs had to apply paddles to his heart. Spencer says he remembers the helicopter ride to the hospital. He is now nearly whole again.

Two weeks before the start of school, our daughter, Sarah, was run over by a car driven by someone who never saw her. She does not remember the flashing lights or the sirens of the ambulance that took her to the hospital. Her injuries, though less severe than her brother's, have been more painful for our family as she has been awake for much of her ordeal.

What our family has learned is this: Let revenge become compassion and forgiveness. Through forgiveness, let punishment become nourishment. Our family's wish is to let the drivers of these vehicles know that we will be here to love and aid them in healing the scars of their own souls.

School is starting soon. Please drive with awareness.

Cindy and Jim Gieber
