At about 7:15 a.m. on Aug. 22, a crash involving a dump truck and two cars snarled rush-hour traffic in the southbound lanes of I-15 in North Salt Lake.

Would the Utah Department of Transportation be so kind as to publicly report the amount of money it spends on its "Know Before You Go" ad campaign? The billboards I've seen imply that if you just check their Web site with all those nifty traffic cameras, you won't be late ever again. I suggest government watchdogs in the Legislature should suggest that this particular budget item be diverted to better purposes. The principle of "truth in advertising" is clearly circumvented by this slogan. What, the state government lies? Oh, I'm sorry. By a show of hands, how many logged on before they left for work?

Spend the money if you wish, UDOT, but don't exaggerate the benefits of traffic cameras.
