The Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City is recruiting Church members who would like to serve as volunteer tour guides. Museum tour guides, or docents, give presentations about the museum's exhibits to scheduled tour groups, take outreach programs into schools, and provide gallery information services to museum visitors.
Latter-day Saints interested in volunteering as docents should contact the museum as soon as possible to request information on the next training class.
Applicants for the docent tour guide program should have an avid interest in history, art, humanities and education, and be well-rounded individuals who enjoy working with people.
Those interested in volunteering should call the museum at 240-4615 to request an information packet and application form. Packets may be requested no later than October 18. Positions are limited and selections will be made based on the applicant's qualifications and interests. An intensive training program will prepare new docents to teach and work with museum patrons of all ages. Training classes are held once a week starting in early January and running through April. Classes will include sessions on Church history, art, the museum's exhibits and collections and group tour teaching techniques.
"Our docent tour guides are invaluable to the museum," said Steven Olsen, associate managing director of Church history. "They provide numerous services for our visitors and they do a wonderful job."
Applicants must be members of the Church and willing to make a three-year commitment to the museum. Applicants will be interviewed, and those accepted into the new class of docent tour guides will receive callings as part-time Church-service missionaries in the Family and Church History Mission.
The museum is located at 45 North West Temple Street in Salt Lake City, north of the Temple Square TRAX station.
