Liz Rivera, letter writer of the month for July, usually writes academic prose, but the immigration issue prompted to pen a letter to the editor. "There's so much debate over immigration," she says. "My grandfather was an immigrant from Mexico. Today's immigrants are my brothers and sisters, they have the same hopes and fears as I do."
Rivera is a native of Utah. She currently lives in Riverton.
Bill Revene (Readers' Forum, June 29) states we do not "owe" low-wage immigrant workers a living. Perhaps he doesn't. But I believe I do.
Besides my citizenship, I have been blessed with a "faith." And this faith teaches me "we are all beggars," that "when we serve our fellowman we are serving our God," and that "to whom much is given, much is required." We sing "because I have been given much, I too must give."
I do not presume to have earned every blessing I have been given. And perhaps I don't owe an immigrant a living — but what do I owe my God and conscience?
