The co-founder of a youth rowing group who told another woman she was a doctor and gave her an exam to determine if she was pregnant, was sentenced to probation this week.

Mar Janna Dahl, 38, was charged in 3rd District Court in July 2006 with two counts of forcible sex abuse, both second degree felonies, and two counts of unlawful conduct, both third degree felonies.

Dahl was close friends with the victim in 2005 when the woman was attempting to get pregnant but was unable to see a doctor right away, according to court documents. Dahl told the woman she was an obstetrician/gynecologist.

Twice in 2005, Dahl "had the victim (lie) on her bed and the defendant performed a vaginal exam on the victim," according to court documents.

The two women later had a falling out, and the victim learned her former friend may not have really been a doctor, court documents stated. When police confronted Dahl about this, she admitted she had only attended medical school for a "period of time," court documents stated.

This year, Dahl reached a plea deal, pleading guilty to one count of unlawful sexual conduct in exchange for the other charges being dismissed.

She was sentenced Monday to a suspended zero to five years in prison and 45 days on an ankle monitor. She also was ordered to have a mental health evaluation and write a letter of apology to the victim.

Dahl is the co-founder of Utah Crew, a nonprofit group that teaches rowing to juveniles.
