Utah
VOLLEYBALL: The No. 21 Utah women's volleyball team dropped a five-game thriller to Tennessee, 3-2, to close out the AVCA Showcase on Saturday.
With the match tied 2-2, Utah came out strong in game five, quickly taking a 5-1 lead. Tennessee took a timeout to regroup and began to chip away at the Utes' lead. The turning point of the match came as the Lady Vols went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 13-13 with help from kills by Nikkie Fowler and Milan Clark. The two squads matched each other for the next several points, reaching 16-16. Utah made two attack errors to give Tennessee the points it needed to end the game, 18-16.
Senior Whitney Webb led Utah with 21 kills for a new career-high, while junior Kathryn Haynie tied her career-high with 20 kills. Haynie also set a career-high with three service aces. Freshman Keisha Fisher had 59 assists, while senior Connie Dangerfield tallied 22 digs.
Brigham Young
SOCCER: The BYU women's soccer team will get one step closer to the regular season as the Cougars host the Dixie State College Rebels on Monday at 8 p.m. at South Stadium in the team's only exhibition match of the year.
Monday will be the last opportunity for Herman Trophy-candidates Jessica Harmon-Carter and Katie Larkin to hone their skills in front of the home crowd before kicking off the 2007 regular season on the road.
Admission to Monday's game is free, and all BYU parking lots are available to the public after 7 p.m.

BASEBALL: Salt Lake Community College has added Derek Waddoups as an assistant baseball coach. Waddoups replaces outgoing assistant coach Tony Pezely. Also joining the Bruin staff as a volunteer coach is former major-league pitcher Kelly Downs.
VOLLEYBALL: Opening the 2007 season at the CSI Outback Tournament, the Salt Lake CC Bruins won all four matches on Friday.
Weber State
SOCCER: Senior midfielder Shelli Gough gave the Wildcats all the offense they needed, scoring twice in the first half as Weber State defeated Southern Utah 4-1 in the squad's third friendly of the 2007 season.
The Thunderbirds cut the deficit to a single goal in the 33rd minute as Kelsey Buchanan executed a nice header from 15 yards out. Kelly Gaughan scored in the 48th minute and teammate Kelsie Ehlers in the 80th minute to put the game away for Weber State.
Utah Valley
SOCCER: After scoring early and leading for nearly three-quarters of the game, Utah Valley fell 3-1 to reigning Big Sky champion Idaho State in the Wolverines' final exhibition game.
Utah Valley scored first when junior Shantae Adams found sophomore Adrienne Schneider alone in the box. Schneider headed the ball into the net just 7:44 into the game.
Idaho State outshot UVSC 14-2 in the period but did not score. In the second half, the Bengals scored in the 65th, 73rd and 89th minutes to rally for the win.
Utah Valley has a week to prepare for its season opener against Southern Utah on Aug. 31. Kickoff in Orem is slated for 4 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL: The Utah State volleyball team defeated Eastern Washington 30-26, 26-30, 30-27, 30-21 at the Sheraton Four Points Wildcat Classic on Saturday afternoon.
