A total lunar eclipse will be visible throughout the United States early Tuesday, assuming the weather cooperates.

However, Utahns planning to view the event may be disappointed. The National Weather Service predicts that Salt Lake City has a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms tonight and says the sky will be mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast for Tuesday.

In the event that some locations are relatively free of clouds, around 3:30 a.m. simply look to the west and watch the moon.

The total phase begins at 3:52 a.m., according to Patrick Wiggins, NASA solar system ambassador to Utah. By the time the Earth's shadow starts to leave the orb, at 5:22 a.m., the moon will be setting.
