Los Angeles Times columnist Sonja Bolle examines the phenomenon of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series of vampire romance novels and notes: "The abnormal-normal boyfriend takes on a curious meaning when you consider the fact that the 34-year-old author is a Mormon with three sons of her own. You can't help but be struck by the idea that Mormons, whose history is filled with bloody conflict and social rejection, might have an affinity for the story of a family that lives with a special set of constraints and cannot be wholly integrated into human society. The Mormon connection also throws an interesting light on Meyer's compelling view of restraint. 'What's a nice Mormon girl like you doing writing about vampires and werewolves?' Meyer is often asked at her readings. What is behind the question, I think, is: If coffee is out for you as a Mormon, what's your idea of fun?"
