Edwin Smith (Readers' Forum, Aug. 27) says that those in favor of vouchers are not the economically elite. He then hits the paradoxical nail on the head when he states they "are willing to sacrifice precious personal resources to give their children a better alternative to the spoon-fed agenda now in power."
It is so paradoxical that Republicans are pushing for vouchers while also railing against the "spoon-fed agenda now in power." The last time I checked, Utah has had a Republican governor and Legislature dating back to the 1980s. On the federal level, the Republicans have run the show since 2000 and were responsible for passing No Child Left Behind.
Given all this, I urge Mr. Smith and all voucher supporters who feel as he does to abandon the Republican Party. Break the Republican grip on power, and vouchers might not be necessary!
