A 6-year-old girl who was impaled on a piece of rebar was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition over the weekend.
The accident happened about 8:40 p.m. Saturday in a back yard near 3500 East and 10000 South. The girl was climbing a ladder in her back yard, which was undergoing remodeling, said Sandy Police Sgt. Victor Quezada.
The girl slipped and fell on a piece of rebar being used to build a wall. It went 17 inches into her body, Quezada said.
Relatives helped the girl off and a helicopter took her to Primary Children's, where she underwent surgery.
An update on the girl's condition was not available Monday.
Police encourage parents to take precautions when doing home improvement projects, such as keeping objects like ladders flat on the ground when not being used so children are not tempted to climb on them.
