Forever young
Mike Flynt is a senior at Division III Sul Ross State in Texas, hoping to earn a starting spot at linebacker. He's in great shape, motivated, respectful and, oh, did we mention he's also 59?
The former strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M was booted off the SRS team 37 years ago for fighting. Fast forward to 2007 and he's back and working out with the team in the hot August sun, after finding he still has a year of eligibility.
Never mind he has an AARP card and kids older than any of his teammates. He might be the key to a championship.
"I actually grieved for more years than I can remember the loss of that senior year," Flynn told the A.P. "I don't know if I ever got over it."
He may never have gotten over that bout of tropical delirium, either, but who's to say? His wife's reaction: "I feel like I'm married to Peter Pan."
Or is it Goofy? That's hard to say, too.
Behind enemy lines
Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt and her husband of 27 years are divorcing. No specific reason was cited, but Rock On sources say the back- breaker was when he suggested they buy a vacation home in Connecticut.
Down in flames
Did you hear about the Baltimore Orioles losing 30-3 to the Rangers last week? It was the biggest margin of loss since 1896.
Or since "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" hit the big screen.
The sporting life
In the open-mouth, insert-foot department, there's Knicks' guard Stephon Marbury, who tried to defend Michael Vick and dogfighting.
"I think it's tough," Marbury reportedly told Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors."
Yeah, we understand. Like prostitution and drug dealing, right?
Mark of excellence
Now here's some sobering news: Hafa is no more.
Former Jazz center Rafael Araujo, aka Hafa, has signed a contract to play basketball in Russia. Part of the reported deal is that he gets a private driver from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Some say he wants the driver so he can get to practice at any time of the day.
Or is it to get him to the tattoo parlor for opening and closing?
Doggone right
Among David Letterman's "Top 10 Michael Vick Excuses":
"Fights weren't worse than what you see on 'The View.'"
