Recent studies have spotlighted medicine abuse, including the abuse of over-the-counter cough medicines, as an alarming trend among young people.
In recognition of the first-ever congressionally designated National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month, the Salt Lake City Mayor's Coalition on Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs, Consumer Healthcare Products Association and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America are hosting a town hall meeting to discuss solutions to the dangerous trend of teens abusing medicine to get high.
The event will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salt Lake City Library Auditorium, 210 E. 400 South.
Speakers and panelists include Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson; Gen. Arthur T. Dean, chairman and CEO of the coalition; Kevin Kraushaar, vice president of CHPA; Shari Welch, emergency room physician at LDS Hospital; Michael Doron, parent; Debra Hobbins, nurse practitioner at Discovery House Treatment Center; Kim Compagni, pharmacist at Smith's Food & Drug; and Dr. George Van Komen.
