JUSTIN SORENSEN, Bingham: Thanks to the booming right leg of this BYU-bound senior, the top-ranked Miners edged No. 2 Alta in a mammoth rematch of the 2006 Class 5A title game last Friday.
Sorensen, who looks looks more like a linebacker than a kicker, booted three field goals, including two 50-plus yarders in the second half, to power Bingham to a 23-20 win over the Hawks.
Midway through the third quarter, he kicked a 59-yarder, one yard short of a 37-year-old state record.
That field goal tied the contest, and following a Sam Langi touchdown, Sorensen's 51-yarder with 2:29 remaining in the fourth helped seal Bingham's narrow win.
ERICA OWENS, Highland: The Rams have been the early surprise team of the soccer season, and this goalkeeper is a big reason why. Only a junior, she has posted three shutouts out of four Region 6 games.
"Erica has all kinds of athletic ability," said coach Lloyd Siegendorf. "She is a tall keeper and has made a ton of tremendous saves so far on the year. She is just a boost to the girls knowing she is back there in the net."
Besides excelling on the soccer field, Owens competes in track and field, but perhaps her most impressive accomplishment so far in her high school career is her perfect 4.0 GPA while taking honors and AP classes.
"She is just a special kind of player, but even more she is a great person. The all-around type of girl that can succeed at whatever she puts her mind to," concluded Siegendorf.
