A 53-year-old Woodland Hills man died Monday when the truck he was driving experienced mechanical problems and crashed, said Utah County Sheriff Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

Clarke Lewis Wightman was killed when his stripe-painting truck went off the road and crashed because he lost use of the brakes, Cannon said.

Wightman's 18-year-old son, who was riding with him at the time of the accident, was hospitalized in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with a liver laceration. Doctors say his condition is serious but stable, Cannon said.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. Monday as Wightman came out of the city on Woodland Hills Drive, a steep, winding hill, Cannon said.

The son said Wightman told him to quickly put his seat belt on but was unable to get his on before the accident, Cannon said.
