LINDON — Lindon has decided to start its own police force by July 1.
The City Council met Tuesday with Pleasant Grove fire and police officials to officially state its desire to break away. Lindon has contracted with Pleasant Grove for police, fire and emergency services for 23 years.
In an attempt to slowly make the transition, the city will tackle a police force first.
The first step is getting a police chief hired by mid-October. Step No. 2 is establishing a master plan and turning the city center basement into a police station by Jan. 1, said Lindon City Mayor James Dain.
Purchasing equipment soon after January is step No. 3.
Lindon will continue contracting with Pleasant Grove for dispatch, fire and EMT services.
The city will begin considering starting its own fire and EMT services in three to four years after it gets the police force up and going.
"This is a pretty historic motion for this city," Dain said. "This is a major step for Lindon. We couldn't have done it without discussion. This is not an indication that we don't get along, it's just an indication that we're growing."
