Police in Sandy and Midvale are looking for a man who robbed a gas station and tried to rob a shoe store.

The man, described as a 5 foot, 3-inch tall white male with long brown curly hair, used a 3-inch switchblade knife as intimidation on both occasions.

The first robbery occurred about 8:45 at a shoe store near 1140 East and Fort Union Boulevard, said Midvale Police Sgt. Gregg Olsen. The man, clad in blue jeans and a creme-colored flannel shirt, demanded money from the cashier after flashing his knife, but ran away after she yelled.

Midvale police were called to the scene and set up a containment area around the robbed store. They then used dogs to try to find the man, but were unsuccessful, Olsen said.

She complied, and he left, Quezada said. He may have driven away in a red car.

Police in Sandy and Midvale are working together to find the man. Video surveillance of the crimes was recorded and will be made public as soon as possible, Olsen said.
