Big Lots
Big Lots, the largest U.S. seller of overstocked items, reported profit above analysts' average estimates.
Columbus, Ohio-based Big Lots credited sales of higher-priced furniture, mattresses and electronics for its second-quarter net income which expanded more than fivefold to $23.4 million, or 22 cents a share, up from $4.3 million, or 4 cents, a year earlier.
Dollar Tree
Dollar Tree, the biggest U.S. retailer of items costing $1 or less, said second-quarter net income jumped 12 percent to $32.6 million, or 33 cents a share, from $29 million, or 28 cents, a year earlier. Sales increased 9.9 percent to $971.2 million.
Dollar Tree has benefited from the addition of more- profitable frozen and refrigerated foods at more of its 3,334 stores.
