FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Eli Manning had another solid tuneup for the regular season, even if it was brief. Tom Brady didn't need one.
Manning led a 16-play touchdown drive on the opening series, then went to the sideline with most of the New York Giants' other starters in the Patriots 27-20 exhibition win Thursday night.
The Giants (1-3) got the ball first and scored on a 1-yard run by Brandon Jacobs. Manning was 5-for-8 for 58 yards on the drive, including four first-down passes to Jeremy Shockey.
Backup Jared Lorenzen was sacked seven times and went 10-for-16 for 53 yards.
Matt Cassell started for the Patriots (2-2) and led two scoring drives, ending in Stephen Gostkowski's 37-yard field goal and Heath Evans' 1-yard touchdown run that gave them the lead for good, 10-7. Cassell went 10-for-14 for 99 yards on three series before being replaced by 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde.
With the score 20-13, Matt Gutierrez threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Bam Childress with 2:54 left before Ryan Grant scored on a 1-yard run with 49 seconds to go.
BILLS 16, LIONS 14: At Detroit, rookie Troy Edwards directed a 90-yard drive that set up a tiebreaking field goal with 1:46 left, and Buffalo recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Reserve running back Fred Jackson pulled Buffalo within three with a 5-yard run early in the third quarter. The plodding game was won by the Bills (2-2) as Edwards drove them downfield with some clutch passes on third downs.
Kevin Kasper brought the final kickoff out of the middle of the end zone while teammate Brian Calhoun tried to stop him and turned over the ball for Detroit (2-2).
JAGUARS 31, REDSKINS 14: At Jacksonville, Fla., the Jaguars had 30 players, including Byron Leftwich, who were inactive or rested. But backup quarterback David Garrard was effective and Jacksonville rallied to beat Washington. Jason Campbell returned to the starting lineup after missing a game with a bruised left knee, completing 5 of 5 passes for 54 yards and his first touchdown of the preseason.
Mark Brunell, trying to old off Todd Collins for the No. 2 job, was 5-of-6 for 47 yards and a touchdown for the Redskins (2-2). Collins did not play.
Third-team quarterback Quinn Gray, who could be cut on Saturday, was 17-of-22 for 172 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars (3-1).
SAINTS 7, DOLPHINS 0: At New Orleans, rookie Pierre Thomas may have played himself into an NFL roster spot. The former Illinois running back rushed 16 times for 81 yards and the only touchdown, had two catches for 47 yards and added a decent kickoff return. Fellow rookie Antonio Pittman rushed for 77 yards for New Orleans (3-2). Rookie John Beck had trouble getting the offense going for Miami (2-2). He was 8-of-15 for 63 yards and two interceptions and was sacked four times.
VIKINGS 23, COWBOYS 14: At Minneapolis, Brooks Bollinger shrugged off a shaky performance in Seattle by throwing for 109 yards and a touchdown in just under two quarters of Minnesota's victory over the Cowboys.
Matt Moore was also impressive for Dallas (2-2) after fumbling the exchange on his second snap of the game, completing nine of his first 10 passes and finishing with 94 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Longwell kicked three field goals for the Vikings (2-2).
Kelly Holcomb, acquired by the Vikings in a trade with Philadelphia, went 5-for-8 for 59 yards.
RAMS 10, CHIEFS 3: At St. Louis, Larry Johnson carried three times for 12 yards in his first action since ending his holdout, but the Chiefs' offense struggled again in a loss to the Rams. Third string quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Marques Hagans in the third quarter to give the Rams (2-2) a 10-0 lead. Hagans, battling for an extra receiving spot, had four catches.
The Chiefs (0-4) were held to a 40-yard field goal by Justin Medlock late in the fourth quarter.
JETS 13, EAGLES 11: At Philadelphia, Mike Nugent kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Jets over the Eagles in a game that quarterbacks Donovan McNabb and Chad Pennington sat out. A.J. Feeley, McNabb's backup, broke a bone in his left hand, but his status for the season is uncertain.
Kevin Kolb threw a 31-yard TD pass to Zac Collie with 2:57 left to get the Eagles (1-3) within one point. Instead of going for a tie, coach Andy Reid went for the lead. Kolb rolled right and tossed a pass to Nate Ilaoa to put Philadelphia ahead 11-10.
Marques Tuiasosopo was 9-for-16 for 78 yards for the Jets (3-1).
BROWNS 19, BEARS 9: At Chicago, Brady Quinn was efficient, leading the Browns to a touchdown and a victory over the Bears. Expected starter Charlie Frye played the first two possessions, completing two of five passes, and Derek Anderson led a field-goal drive late in the first quarter before Quinn entered the game. He was 9-of-14 for 64 yards with an interception for Cleveland (3-1).
The Bears (3-1) lost rookie tight end Greg Olsen to a knee injury late in the first half.
TITANS 30, PACKERS 14: At Nashville, Tenn., Vince Young threw for a touchdown and ran for another for a second straight week, Lendale White added 77 total yards, and the Titans beat Brett Favre and the Packers.
Young was 11-of-16 for 96 yards, rookie receiver Chris Davis added a 70-yard punt return for a TD, and Rob Bironas kicked field goals of 51, 33 and 46 yards for Tennessee (3-1). Favre played two series and was 8-of-10 for 82 yards, and left with Green Bay (2-2) ahead 7-0.
BUCCANEERS 31, TEXANS 24: At Tampa, Fla., Luke McCown threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, and Bruce Gradkowski threw a 31-yard scoring pass to former Ute Paris Warren with three minutes left to lift the Buccaneers. The TD catch was Warren's second of the night and proved costly to the Bucs (3-1). The third-year receiver injured his left leg when he was tackled crossing the goal line and was carted off the field.
Matt Shaub sat out for the Texans (2-2), who led 14-0 before McCown threw TD passes to Warren, B.J. Askew and Lionel Gates on the way to a 24-17 halftime lead.
STEELERS 19, PANTHERS 3: At Charlotte, N.C., forced to wait out a lightning delay before sitting through a downpour, fans watched Jeff Reed kick four field goals and Tyrone Carter return an interception 32 yards for a touchdown with a minute left. The Steelers (4-1) forced six turnovers in new coach Mike Tomlin's final tuneup. David Carr was 8-for-12 for 85 yards, including a 46-yard pass to rookie Dwayne Jarrett. Keary Colbert appeared to lock up the starting job opposite Smith, adding two catches for 24 yards for the Panthers (1-3).
BRONCOS 21, CARDINALS 3: At Denver, the Broncos were forced to punt four times in their first five possessions, but still managed to keep Arizona winless in the preseason. The Broncos (2-2), beset by injuries all preseason, also lost two more key contributors. Defensive back Karl Paymah sustained a concussion in the second quarter, and tight end Stephen Alexander left the game with a bruised left leg. Matt Leinart struggled in his only series, completing two of six passes for 13 yards.
CHARGERS 16, 49ERS 13: At San Diego, maybe Alex Smith should have stayed on the sideline, too. On a night of faux football that was woefully lacking in star power, Smith punctuated his homecoming with two turnovers. That helped the San Diego beat sloppy San Francisco. Niners third-stringer Shaun Hill threw three interceptions and wide receiver Brandon Williams fumbled. San Diego scored 13 points off turnovers. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates sat out so that new coach Norv Turner, the 49ers' offensive coordinator last year, could look at other players.
SEAHAWKS 19, RAIDERS 14: At Seattle, Daunte Culpepper threw for 108 yards, completing 11 of 19 passes in limited action, and Seattle kept Oakland in check, allowing two TDs in Thursday's preseason matchup.
