The governor's boardroom in the newly remodeled state Capitol will be named for a Democrat — former Gov. Cal Rampton.
Rampton, 93, was first elected in 1964 and is the only Utah governor to have served three full terms.
Utah's current governor, Republican Jon Huntsman Jr., announced the boardroom naming Thursday. "Governor Rampton's example is one we can all emulate and, to the extent we do, we will be better and more effective. He was a powerful statesman," Huntsman said.
The "Cal Rampton Boardroom" name won't become official until the 2008 Legislature takes action. A resolution making the change will be co-sponsored by leaders of both the majority GOP and minority Democratic Party.
The Capitol is set to reopen in December after being closed since 2004 for a $250 million renovation and earthquake retrofit. The new boardroom will include light fixtures, draperies, painting, carpet and furnishings similar to what was in place when the building opened in 1915.
