BECKHAM OUT 6 WEEKS: David Beckham could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy's season after being diagnosed with a sprained right knee Thursday.
The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee, the team said in a statement.
Beckham, 32, was injured in a tackle with Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar in the first half of Wednesday night's SuperLiga title match. The Galaxy lost 4-3 on penalty kicks.
He was expected to be out about six weeks, and will immediately begin rehabilitation, the team said.
That would place his return at mid-October, when the Galaxy would have three regular-season games remaining — against Toronto FC on Oct. 13, New York on Oct. 18 and at Chicago on Oct. 21.

GAY WINS 2ND GOLD: First the 100. Now the 200. And, if Tyson Gay's legs hold up, he can join the elite company of Carl Lewis and Maurice Greene with three wins at the world championships in Osaka, Japan.
Gay completed a sprint double Thursday when he caught up with Jamaica's Usain Bolt halfway through the 200 meters and finished in a world championship time of 19.76 seconds.
"I have two golds and I want the third," Gay said.
Bolt was .15 seconds behind Gay, and American teammate Wallace Spearmon earned bronze in 20.05.
"I got beaten by the No. 1 man in the world," Bolt said. "For the moment, he is unbeatable."
Jurisprudence
PROBATION SENTENCE: An 82-year-old Texas woman who pleaded guilty to trying to extort $2 million from Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr was sentenced to one year probation.
A federal judge on Wednesday ordered Ruby Y. Young to not have any contact with Starr or his family or contact the media about an alleged relationship she had with the two-time Super Bowl MVP in 1960.
Court documents show Young sent a 3 1/2 page letter to Starr in October 2006 that read, in part, "And now, the time has come for you to pay — to pay for the many injuries you caused me."
The letter continued, "I am going to be vindicated one way or another. You know very well that any and all tabloids, TV news casters such as ABC, CBS, NBC would simply devour this story."
Young pleaded guilty in June.

STARS SIGN JOKINEN: The Dallas Stars have re-signed left wing Jussi Jokinen to a two-year deal.
Jokinen's two-year deal is worth about $1.8 million per season.
The 24-year-old Jokinen was one of three Stars to appear in all 82 games last season. He finished with 14 goals and 34 assists, which ranked fifth on the team. He has played two seasons with the Stars.

TOYOTA DEAL? Joe Gibbs Racing has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C., and several published reports say the team will announce it has signed a deal to field Toyotas in the Nextel Cup series.
The reports, citing unidentified sources, said JGR will end its 16-year relationship with General Motors and give Toyota its first big name team in Cup. Team officials refused comment on the report Thursday but did confirm the news conference and that drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin are expected to be at the announcement.
