OREM — Police are warning Orem residents against several e-mail scams, one of which involves a threat against the recipient's life.

An Orem man reported to police Tuesday that he received an e-mail message from an unknown sender who said they had been hired to kill him.

However, if the man paid him a certain amount, the sender would not go through with the "contract kill," said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.

The message was allegedly poorly worded and grammatically inaccurate, suggesting English was not the person's native language.

The person who wrote the e-mail said, "I have followed you closely for one week and three days now," Edwards said.

Edwards said that if people receive this type of message, there is no need to go into hiding or send money or personal information to the writer. Deleting the e-mail will be sufficient.

If there are legitimate concerns, contact the police.

Another scam to be aware of is any e-mail that states the recipient is a winner of a large amount of money, or a sweepstakes, Edwards said.

He instructed residents to keep in mind the adage, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is," he said.
