A man was charged in 3rd District Court on Wednesday with two counts of third-degree felony arson and one count of Class A misdemeanor arson.

The 49-year-old man, who had no listed address, found a book of matches on the street Monday and lit grass fires in three locations, according to the documents filed Wednesday. The fires burned at 40 N. 200 East; 270 N. East Capitol Blvd.; and 360 N. East Capitol Blvd.

Property was threatened or damaged at each location. In one location, a power pole was destroyed at a cost of $3,000.

The man told police he set the fires and explained that his goal was to be sent back to prison. He is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

If convicted on all counts, the man could face up to 10 years in prison and one year in jail.
