An alleged serial thief who has been preying on people in doctors' offices in Davis County was arrested Tuesday following an extensive investigation over several months.
Bethany A. Campbell, 43, was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of numerous charges, including 13 counts of credit card fraud, forgery and theft.
Those charges came just from Layton Police, who hope Campbell's arrest will clear up 18 cases.
Investigators say for several months, Campbell has been walking into clinics in Davis County during business hours. While no one was looking or paying attention in the busy office, investigators say, Campbell would grab any unattended purse she could find, usually those owned by nurses on duty.
In one incident, detectives believe Campbell stole a nurse's purse from an office on April 25. She used the nurse's checks and credit cards at local retail stores and was caught on store surveillance video fraudulently buying items at Wal-Mart.
Clearfield Police placed the woman on the city's Most Wanted list. They re-released information and the video to the media Tuesday. Hours later, Campbell was arrested when a police officer recognized her sport-utility vehicle parked at a pawn shop, where she was trying to sell tools.
A struggle with police ensued before she was taken into custody and arrested.
She was being held in the Davis County Jail today without bail.
