CALGARY, Alberta — Weber State's men's basketball team returned from a trip to Canada with a 3-1 record following the Battle of the Border tournament hosted by the University of Calgary.
The Wildcats closed out the tournament with a 95-76 win over the University of Saskatchewan on Monday.
"Overall, this three-day session has helped us to begin some good team chemistry," WSU coach Randy Rahe said, "and gives us a head start as we roll to preseason practice in another six weeks."
Weber State also picked up convincing wins over the Mount Royal All-Stars (84-42) and the University of Lethbridge (97-31), but dropped the back end of a Saturday doubleheader to the University of Calgary (81-74) for its only loss of the weekend.
Led by seniors Dezmon Harris, Tyler Billings and Arturis Valeika, the Wildcats shot the ball extremely well in the tournament.
Billings averaged 11.5 points per game to share top-scoring honors with junior forward Daviin Davis. Harris added 10.8 points per game, and Valeika tossed in another 10.3 points while grabbing a team-best 8.3 rebounds.
As a unit, the Wildcats scored 87.8 points per contest as Rahe spread the ball around, trying to get many of his younger players used to his system.
Players such as Steve Panos, Danny Johnson and Trevor Morris each saw significant playing time and will be counted on to help the team as it seeks to repeat as Big Sky champions.
With the early training weekend behind them, the Wildcats return to school, waiting for their official training to begin in anticipation of the regular season opener at home against Utah State on Nov. 10.
