Bertha Poppleton Maughan Whitehouse

1917 ~ 2008

Bertha Poppleton Maughan Whitehouse returned to her Heavenly Father on January 12, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She was born in Wellsville, Utah on August 29, 1917, one of nine children of Charles Nibley Maughan and Bertha Riggs Poppleton. She married Franklin Whitehouse, Jr. on May 28, 1943 and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They were parents of five children: Paula Ann, Roger Frank, Susan, Scott Maughan and Russell Maughan. Bertha, or "Bert," as she was called by family and friends, was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved and appreciated nature and the outdoors. She loved working in her rose garden and had a green thumb with every plant she ever touched. She was named after her mother and proud of her heritage. She loved her family and every moment she shared with them. She was fondly called "the funny grandma" by her beloved grandchildren. Bert's wonderful sense of humor and love of life were infectious to all around her. Bert spent her lifetime working as an educator. She graduated from Utah State Agricultural College (USU) with a Bachelor's Degree. She was a teacher for 28 years, the majority of which was spent at Tooele High School teaching English. She loved the kids she worked with and tried to inspire them to be the best they could be. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many church callings, where she especially enjoyed teaching young people about the gospel.
