PROVO — Citing an expanding economic base, low crime statistics and a swath of new development projects, Provo Mayor Lewis Billings summed up the state of the city Thursday by saying, "It's great to be in Provo."

Provo's population has skyrocketed over the past 60 years, Billings said, but city officials have managed to raise the economy, not taxes, to keep up with the growth.

"I'm pleased to report we have not raised your taxes," he said.

Billings attributed the city's success to "people stepping up to the base and taking responsibility for what's in front of them."

Although Provo is one of the three largest cities in Utah, it has a remarkably low crime rate he said — much lower than that of Salt Lake or West Valley.

"We consider that to be very positive and very significant," Billings said.

Billings also mentioned a number development projects in the works, including a prospective conference center.

"It's still talk, but it's talk we're excited about," he said.
